Using saws and hammers, Copenhagen Police on Friday tore down the open-air cannabis market in Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood in the city. Thirty-seven cannabis stalls were destroyed and 18 people were arrested. Five kilos of hash, four kilos of marijuana and over 1,000 joints were confiscated by police, who also seized 42,000 kroner (5,650 euros), a knife, illegal pepper spray and fireworks. Police said the action was carried out to create "a peaceful and safe Christiania for everyone," but reports said that cannabis sales resumed within minutes of police leaving.
