About 360 unaccompanied refugee children disappeared from asylum centres in the Netherlands last year, and there are fears that many may have been the victims of human trafficking, or forced into slavery and prostitution. The figures come from the government’s human trafficking monitor, which covers the 2013 to 2017 period. The government has no idea what happened to these children, but has taken steps to stop child refugees from disappearing by introducing smaller care units with better leadership, and introducing more closed homes for youngsters who are considered to be at risk.
