Migrants currently stuck in Calais and seeking asylum in the UK should be allowed to make their claims from France, says the president of the region, Xavier Bertrand. Instead of having to wait until they reach Britain, as the current practice calls for, migrants should be able to apply from registered "hotspots" in France, Bertrand says. The current bilateral agreement between France and the UK, called the Treaty of Le Touquet, allows British immigration officials to check documents in Calais and their French counterparts to do the same in Dover.
