The Brussels chief of police was hit in the head by a protester at an anti-austerity demonstration involving 60,000 people in the Belgian capital on Tuesday. Pierre Vandersmissen, who had to spend the night in hospital, was using pepper spray on demonstrators when he was knocked unconscious. Vandersmissen is a controversial figure, and there's a dedicated Facebook page calling for his removal after he ordered the arrests of anti-racist protesters, including the head of Belgium's League of Human Rights, Alexis Deswaef.
