Belgium's House of Representatives on May 24 will vote on an amendment to the 2007 law on gender reassignment. This new version of the law aims to ease the requirements that people wishing to change gender on their ID must meet. Until now, such a change had to be authorized by a psychiatrist, as it the case for a mental health condition. Transgender persons were thus required to undergo sterilization (through vasectomy or tubal ligation), which goes against international standards. While the new bill represents significant progress, gender reassignment cannot be reversible under it.
