Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has come out in support of a ban on the wearing of full-faced veils in the country "wherever it is legally possible." Speaking at a meeting of her CDU party, she backed a burqa ban in schools, courthouses and other state buildings, although it is widely accepted that it would not be legally possible under the German Constitution to implement a total ban on face veils. Merkel's positioning on the issue appears political: the country goes to the polls next year, and she is facing increasingly strong opposition from the right-wing AfD party.
