As debate rages within the government and the Seimas (Parliament) regarding the return of mandatory military service (abolished in 2008), both men and women have complained of discrimination to the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman’s Office – like before, only men will be conscripted. However, the speaker of the Seimas sees no infringement of equal opportunities here: "The duty of girls and women is to give birth to children and bear future volunteers and soldiers, so that soldiers could protect the Fatherland, while the duty of men is to protect the Fatherland, family, their woman and children."
