"Higher education has to become more diverse," says college chairman Geert ten Dam of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). "We are not doing enough." Only 14 percent of students at the UvA had a non-western background last year. That is more than the national average, but less than the Free University of Amsterdam and Erasmus University in Rotterdam. "The university has to be accessible for everyone who is intelligent and motivated enough to study here. Currently, that is not the case," states Ten Dam.
