Torture survivors have won a case against the Home Office on asylum seeker detention in the UK. The government had argued that torture could only be carried out by state agents or terror groups with territory. But the court sided with the charity Medical Justice and former immigration centre detainees who argued the definition is too narrow. The ruling followed accusations of people being locked up during the processing of their applications, despite doctors' evidence of torture and ill-treatments. The Home Office will not appeal against the ruling, which could affect hundreds of cases.
