Does Torture Exist in Italy?

"Chiamiamola tortura" (Let's call it torture) is a campaign launched first by Antigone two years ago and relaunched on the 28th of March 2014. The campaign aims to introduce the crime of torture in Italy's penal code.

by Associazione Antigone

Antigone continues its fight for the recognition of torture as a specific crime after the Senate of the Republic approved the legislation that would do so. With the relaunch of the campaign, Antigone wants to raise public attention to convince the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament to approve the law.

Back in 1989, Italy ratified the United Nation Convention against Torture, which imposes a specific crime of torture in the penal codes of the signing states, yet Italy has never introduced the relating law into its national legislation. Even more worrisome is that in Italy the practice of torture does exist, but it is not punished effectively.

Therefore, we ask our supporters to sign Antigone's petition calling on the Italian Parliament to approve legislation for the introduction of the crime of torture. Thousands of people already did it. Please do it too:
