As intersex people remain largely unrecognized in European societies, their fundamental rights are often not respected. The mainstream approach, whereby people are recognized as either male or female, impacts on law and policy, according to the latest research by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). The results, presented in a new FRA focus paper, show that there is a need to review laws and practices across the EU that can lead to discrimination against and violations of the physical and psychological integrity of intersex people, especially those at a young age.
