Following the closure of all the Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals, Italian legislators established the Residences for the Execution of Security Measures (Rems) - structures that should host (only) the perpetrators of crimes who were judged to be mentally ill or socially dangerous. These places should be places used as a last resort following a final judgment. However, several people are currently housed in Rems as a temporary measure, and are erroneously considered psychiatric patients - which jeopardizes purpose and function of the facilities.
