The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has upheld Belgium's ban on wearing full-face veils in public. The case was brought to the court by two Muslim women who said the ban violated their rights. The ECtHR ruled unanimously on Tuesday that the ban did not violate rights standards, saying it helped ensure the "protection of the rights and freedoms of others" and was "necessary in a democratic society." Belgium implemented its ban against partially or completely covering the face with clothing in June 2011.
