Slovakia's referendum on banning gay marriage and gay adoption has failed due to low turnout. The referendum, held Saturday, gave voters the opportunity to restrict the definition of marriage to heterosexual couples and prevent gay couples from adopting children. Voters were also asked if sex education in schools could be optional. Although gay rights opponents were more successful at the polls, the referendum failed because an absolute majority of the country's 4 million registered voters did not participate (roughly 944,000 voted on Saturday).
