People who are victims of human trafficking, slavery and domestic servitude have no systematic support for recovery, a sobering report by the UK’s Work and Pensions Committee warns. This means hundreds of victims of slavery are abandoned by authorities as soon as they are identified, exposing them to the risk of falling straight back into the hands of traffickers. NGOs warn that these vulnerable people are often at high risk of destitution, alcoholism and exploitation – in the absence of government-funded care. In 2016, 1,400 victims of human trafficking were identified in the UK.
