Italy still lags behind most European countries when it comes to LGBTI rights, which means that same-sex couples and families basically find no recognition and protection from the law. For this reason, the fact that a judge of the Court for Minors of Rome approved the adoption of a young girl by her mother's longtime female partner deserves special celebration. There is a judge in Rome, one may say. But it is still only a small step: how long must we wait for the equal treatment of gay couples and parents, for them to cease being something extraordinary and rather be seen as ordinary?
