After last Tuesday's approval of the Constitutional Court, the Romanian Senate also approved a call for a referendum singed by over 3 million people. At the 7 October referendum Romanian citizens will be asked about changes to the constitution that would permanently ban same-sex marriage. The public vote on the amendment will ask Romanians if they want it to be explicitly stated that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Opponents of the vote argue the amendment would be discriminatory and "out of step with reality". Romania does not currently recognise same-sex marriage.
