After two weeks of sustained protests against the government's efforts to water down existing anti-corruption legislation, MPs have agreed to a proposal for a referendum on how to fight corruption. The referendum was suggested by President Klaus Iohannis, a political opponent of the centre-left government, and he will now have to frame the question and pick a date for the vote. The recent protests – the largest in Romania since the fall of communism – were set off by the government's decision to pass a decree that makes corruption punishable only if the damages exceed €40,000.
