Low turnout has voided the referendum in Romania on restricting the definition of marriage to exclude same-sex unions. Just 20.4 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the weekend referendum, short of the 30 percent needed to make it valid. Although same-sex couples are not currently allowed to enter into marriage or civil relationship, critics warned that, had the referendum passed, same-sex marriages would be almost impossible in the future. Two weeks ago, the Romanian Constitutional Court ruled that gay couples have the same rights to a family life as heterosexual couples.
