The United Nations' strategy on drugs for the past 10 years has been a failure, according to a major report by the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC). The IDPC, a network of 177 NGOs concerned with drug policy is calling for a major rethink of the global policy on illegal drugs. The report concludes that the “war on drugs” approach has had scant effect on global supply, while having negative effects on health, human rights, security and development. In the last 10 years drug-related deaths have increased by 145% and at least 3,940 people have been executed for drug offences worldwide.
