Resistance is mounting over a so-called security package that has been agreed to by Austria's ruling coalition. The new security program, which would take effect in June 2017, introduces several new surveillance measures and additional powers for the Austrian security agencies, including more robust data retention, registration of prepaid SIM cards, and automatic vehicle license plate recognition systems. Human rights advocates argue that the need for such expansive new powers is not evident, pointing out that no evaluation of existing surveillance measures has been carried out.
