A young man from Rome has been sentenced to one year in prison because he cultivated marijuana for therapeutic reasons. Fatherless, he used the drug to help care for his seriously ill mother. The marijuana alleviated his mother's pain, so, as it is impossible to obtain lawfully, he decided to cultivate four small marijuana plants. Notwithstanding the judge's acknowledgment that there were "worthy reasons" behind his behavior, the man was sentenced under the same guidelines as a professional drug dealer.
