The Sejm, the lower house of Poland's Parliament, has voted to send to committee a bill that would ban abortions due to irreversible damage to the foetus. A similar bill was considered by legislators in October 2016, but it was rejected after mass protests.

In 2016, there were 1,100 legal abortions in Poland and 1,042 were performed due to a damaged foetus. What is more, Parliament rejected a proposal to liberalise the abortion law, which otherwise only allows the procedure when the mother's health or life are in danger or the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest.
