The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee voted on Monday to trigger an EU sanction process against Hungary over violations of the rule of law. The unprecedented move will result in member states examining the state of Hungary’s rule of law and democracy. The vote comes a week after the Hungarian parliament passed a law that criminalizes NGOs helping asylum seekers, and a constitutional amendment creating a parallel court system. The call for Article 7 in the draft report was earlier supported by 4 other EP committees. Fidesz’s European political party, EPP was split over the vote.
