A High Court judge on Thursday dismissed a challenge to Northern Ireland's prohibition of same-sex marriage. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK and Ireland that prohibits same-sex marriage. The presiding judge ruled that the ban does not violate LGBT rights because the ban is a matter of social policy and not human rights, and it is up to Northern Ireland's devolved assembly to set social policy. The ruling also said that Northern Ireland authorities are legally correct to treat married gay couples that move to Northern Ireland as being in civil partnerships.
