A Moroccan court has dropped charges against Helena Maleno, a Spanish human rights activist who helped save hundreds of lives in the Mediterranean, because of a lack of evidence. She had been investigated for supposedly colluding with human traffickers. Maleno, who lives in Morocco and received several awards for her work, regularly received distress calls due to her proximity to migrant communities. She then called maritime authorities to alert them about the boats in distress. Maleno’s case is part of a disturbing trend in which EU states attempt to criminalize migrant helpers.
