The People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the largest party in the Netherlands, wants to criminalise marine refugee and migrant rescue missions. After a call by the VVD, a small majority of parliamentarians (77 out of 150) showed support for amending current legislation to make this possible. The law currently prohibits leaving people in need of help behind, and so do treaties that the Netherlands has ratified. According to the VVD, current legislation enables human trafficking and research is needed to solve this "difficult legal question".
