Gilbert Baker, the San Francisco artist who created the rainbow flag as a symbol for the gay community, has passed away at the age of 65. Baker first designed an eight-color flag for the 1978 San Francisco Pride Parade, with each color representing a different aspect of humanity: pink for sexuality; red for life; orange for healing; yellow for sunlight; green for nature; turquoise for art; indigo for harmony; and violet for the human spirit. The flag would later be reduced to its current six stripes, removing pink and indigo, and swapping blue for turquoise.
