Abortion has been legal in Italy since 1978, but with many doctors (an estimated 70 percent, reaching as high as 90 percent in some regions) refusing to perform abortions for religious reasons, women really struggle to find medical help. The Council of Europe, in a case stemming from a complaint by CGIL (Italy's biggest union), has said that Italy is violating women’s right to health. The Council also said that doctors who are not conscientious objectors in abortion procedures face discrimination in Italy and are victims of "various types of direct and indirect labor disadvantages."
