On Wednesday, April 2, the Chamber of Deputies abolished the crime of illegal immigration, introduced by the Berlusconi government in 2009. Though it wasn't punishable by imprisonment but only by a fine, it had consequences relating to charges of aiding and abetting, as well as for the access to family reunification or citizenship requests. The decision, besides taking pressure off of the courts, leads Italy towards a more humanitarian approach regarding migrants.
