The Hague-based International Criminal
Court (ICC) swore in six new judges - five of whom are women - on 9 March. The new
members of the ICC were elected for nine-year terms and were selected in December
last year at the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the Rome Statute. The judges
come from Peru, Uganda, Japan, Canada, Benin and Italy. The ICC has a bench of 18
judges, who are chosen from among persons of high moral character,
impartiality and integrity who possess the qualifications required in their
respective countries for appointment to the highest judicial offices.
