European Union data protection authorities have reached an agreement on how to address the threat by Romania's data chief to impose a €20 million fine on several journalists who exposed high-level corruption in the country. Giovanni Buttarelli, the EU's data protection supervisor, said on 24 January that a collective decision on how to respond had been reached and would be published "imminently". Romania's data protection authority in November ordered the journalists to disclose their sources, in line with that office's reading of the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
