The Hungarian government on 17 January announced that it would propose a new set of laws that would tax Hungarian human rights organisations that "assist illegal migration" and receive foreign funding. The package of laws has been named 'Stop Soros', referring to Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros, whose foundation partly helps groups that work in defence of migrants' rights. Under the new tax, organisations that receive more funding from outside of Hungary than from inside the country would have to pay a tax of up to 25% on the funds received from abroad.
