The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that UK laws enabling mass surveillance violate human rights. In its 13 September judgment, the Court held that the UK's bulk interception regime violated the right to privacy protected by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 10, which protects the freedom of expression. “This is a major victory for the rights and freedom of people in the UK. It shows that there is – and should be – a limit to the extent that states can spy on their citizens," Megan Goulding, a lawyer for the human rights organization Liberty, said.
