After a leaked letter published in the Hungarian media last week, the European Commission on Monday officially announced its decision to register a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) on EU fundamental values in Hungary. The ECI initiated by the European Humanist Federation aims to collect at least one million signatures from across the EU in the next 12 months. By doing so, they are inviting the Commission to propose to trigger Article 7 of the Treaty for alleged breaches by Hungary of the EU's fundamental values.
