Five Afghan children ran away last week from a center for young asylum seekers in Greece and are now thought to be in Italy. Their flight draws attention to the problems that plague the otherwise serene center set among olive trees on the outskirts of Athens. The administration moves at such a slow pace to reunite kids with their families in other EU states that the children lose hope. Making matters worse, a 2016 European Commission report said that Greek authorities couldn't properly investigate if a child had family in another EU state, meaning the burden of tracing fell on the child.
