Germany’s opposition parties on 7 January called for the repeal of a new law that aims to eliminate hate speech on social media. Their primary concern is that private companies should not be making decisions about the lawfulness of online posts. The law, which went into force on 1 January, imposes fines of up to 50 million euros on sites that fail to remove hate speech promptly. In order to comply, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media and entertainment platforms could block more content than necessary.
