Despite objections from Paris, Jean-René Etchegaray, the Mayor of Bayonne, a city in the French Basque region, is providing shelter for migrants crossing the Spanish border into France. Mr. Etchegaray insists that migrants should be treated with dignity and says that “there are some fundamental rights that can’t be trampled on.” Since Italy closed its borders, Spain has become the main port of entry for migrants coming into Europe from Africa. Migrants attempting to cross the border are often pushed back irregularly by the police.
