100,000 US dollars was spent on 3,000 advertisements over a two-year period until May 2017, a Facebook internal investigation revealed. The ads did not support any parties or politicians in particular but did spread misleading information on a wide range of topics, including immigration, race and equal rights. The advertisements directed users towards around 470 accounts that spread false information or were otherwise in breach of Facebook’s terms and conditions. The accounts have since been deleted by the company.
