Facebook has removed over 800 pages and “inauthentic” profiles as part of an effort to conquer political misinformation on the site. By taking this step Facebook has acknowledged that spammers have lately been using more political content to generate traffic. This has led to criticism from some affected account holders, who argue they are legitimate activists. Facebook said in a related blog-post that it had only removed networks of pages created by fake accounts. The Washington Post said some of the accounts that were removed had been on Facebook for years and had millions of followers.
