The EU signs Istanbul Convention.

The EU has signed the Istanbul Convention, which was adopted by the Council of Europe in 2011. The Istanbul Convention is the most comprehensive international treaty to combat violence against women and domestic violence, which is recognized as a human rights violation. The signature by the EU, made on June 13, 2017, marks a significant step for the international support for preventing and combating violence against women. The global support is also illustrated by the adoption of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict (Resolution 2331) by the United Nations.
