On Tuesday EU diplomats at the political and security committee level agreed to extend Europe’s anti-smuggling operation in the Mediterranean, EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia, by six months. At the same time they also decided to temporarily suspend the deployment of Operation Sophia’s rescue ships while continuing surveillance by air, reinforcing support for the Libyan Coastguard. Operation Sophia was extended by three months in December as EU countries disagreed on a longer commitment. According to official statistics Operation Sophia has saved 45,000 lives since its launch in 2015.
