A wide range of measures to protect domestic abuse victims has been introduced in England and Wales as part of “landmark” legislation. The new law introduces a legal definition of domestic abuse that includes economic abuse and control. Cross-examining victims in family courts will also be banned. Civil society groups say this is a once in a generation chance to combat domestic abuse. England will also get a national Domestic Abuse Commissioner, who will be tasked with improving responses to reports of abuse and support for victims across public services.
