The Hungarian authorities' treatment of asylum seekers at border transit zones is against the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Court of Human Rights ruled unanimously on Tuesday. The verdict says that Hungary’s border-zone detention of two asylum seekers was unlawful under the Convention, and their removal from Hungary to Serbia exposed them to the risk of inhuman and degrading reception conditions in Greece. The plaintiffs' detention for 23 days effectively deprived them of their liberty without any formal decision. The men are entitled to 10,000 euros compensation.
