The European Commission should "try to get all member states in the EU to unreservedly accept same-sex marriage as other marriages," First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans said recently at a Brussels gala of the gay rights NGO ILGA-Europe. Though he acknowledged that the EC can't propose marriage bills, he expressed hope that member states will go ahead and accept same-sex marriages from other EU countries. Currently eight EU states allow same-sex marriage. Finland will allow it from 2017, Slovenia is considering it, and Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favor in May.
