In a consultative referendum on April 6, 32.2 percent of the Dutch electorate voted on the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement, thus barely reaching the 30 percent participation quorum (a legal requirement for the validity of the referendum). Of those who took part, 61.1 percent voted against the agreement and 38.1 voted for it. In the weeks before the referendum, discussions took place about human rights and widespread corruption in Ukraine. The government will now have to consider further steps but can no longer ratify the treaty just like that, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.
