A modern pregnancy test for Down syndrome will become available to all pregnant women in the Netherlands beginning in April 2017. The Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) can demonstrate whether an unborn child has Down syndrome in a safer and more reliable way than the current test. Annually, thousands of women go to Germany or Belgium to get the test. The NIPT is a sensitive topic of conversation in the House of Representatives. The Christian Party (CU) and the Reformed Party (SGP) fear for a 'Down-free' society, where other parties believe that women have the right to know what awaits them.
