For the third consecutive year across Europe, drug overdoses are on the rise, the latest report of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) shows. According to data from 2015, 8,441 overdose deaths were registered across the EU, Norway and Turkey – up from the 7,950 in the previous year. The main causes are opioids – primarily heroin – often used in combination with alcohol and benzodiazepine. Heroin-related death trends are especially worrisome in the UK, Ireland, Scotland and Turkey, while Estonia suffers from the highest mortality rate inked to drug overuse.
