A data transfer pact between the EU and US needs "significant improvements," said European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli. The agreement, known as the EU-US Privacy Shield, is designed to protect EU citizens' data when stored in the US. It was intended to replace the Safe Harbor agreement, which the ECJ invalidated in 2015, but the current version of Privacy Shield is "not robust enough," according to Buttarelli. His opinion does not mean the pact will be dropped, but it is yet more criticism — already heavy from civil liberties watchdogs — that the bill is not strong enough.
