Since the introduction of the obligation to report data breaches earlier this year, 172 of the 390 Dutch municipalities (44 percent) reported a data breach to the Data Protection Authority. Companies and authorities have to file a report if there is an infringement of the personal data of citizens. Since January 1, there have been 3,600 reported cases. "This shows that municipalities have to get their business in order," says Ronald van Raak, an MP for the Socialist Party. "Data protection is the government's responsibility. The Hague has to offer much more support."
